The EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK 2025 wraps up!

This year's EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK, the European Commission’s flagship campaign to raise awareness about sustainable urban mobility, has now wrapped up! The event, which took place from 16 to 22 September, placed the spotlight on the importance of inclusive transport under its 2025 theme—Mobility for Everyone.

EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK (EMW) returned from 16 to 22 September 2025, culminating in the ever-popular Car-Free Day. Organised by the European Commission (EC), this flagship campaign champions sustainable urban mobility and encourages positive change in the way we travel.

The annual week-long event promotes a shift towards active travel, greater use of public transport, and the adoption of cleaner, smarter transport solutions. Local authorities across Europe are encouraged to use the week as a platform to trial innovative planning ideas, showcase new infrastructure and technologies, monitor air quality, and engage directly with residents.

This year’s theme—Mobility for Everyone—highlighted the importance of inclusive and accessible transport. The campaign called for mobility systems that serve all people equally, regardless of income, location, gender, or ability. This year’s EMW urged us to reimagine our cities as places where sustainable transport is not only available, but also affordable, safe, and inclusive—making walking, cycling, and public transport realistic options for everyone.

Cities to the forefront!

With more cities joining each year—and with its strong media appeal—the campaign is widely recognised as a driving force for sustainable urban mobility in Europe and beyond. This year, more than 2,614 cities across 26 countries took part, including several of our committed POLIS members.

You can now explore all of our members' planned activities for this year, as well as look back at those from previous years: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Bilbao, Bologna, Bruges, Brussels, Cork, Dresden, Ghent, Heraklion, Hospitalet de Llobregat, Leuven, Lisboa, Ljubljana, Madrid, Manchester, Mechelen, Prague, Ravenna, Reggio Emilia, Rome, Turku, Vic, Vienna, Vitoria-Gasteiz, and more!

Walking the talk

But it is not only cities that are taking part! NGOs, businesses, civil society organisations, community initiatives, schools, and local administrations are also stepping up—organising bold actions to promote sustainable urban mobility and encourage behavioural change throughout the year. So far, more than 780 actions have been registered across over 40 countries. These range from cycling to work with neighbours to introducing measures that encourage employees to use public transport—showcasing a wide variety of approaches and ideas. Some have also been highlighted for their creativity and strong connection to this year’s theme, which you can view here.

In this spirit, POLIS hosted on 17 September 2025 the first webinar of the new Just Transition Webinar series on transport poverty and mobility justice, titled 'Designing for real choice—Infrastructure as enabler'. Organised by the Active Travel & Health Working Group with the support of the Just Transition Taskforce, it was a fantastic way to celebrate EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK! It explored how walking, wheeling, and cycling infrastructure can reduce transport poverty, empower vulnerable groups, and make urban mobility more inclusive.
