Charting the Course: Cities in motion #5 is out now!
POLIS is proud to announce the launch of Cities in motion ‘Charting the Course,’ the fifth volume of our flagship magazine.
This issue, launched during the Opening Plenary of the Annual POLIS Conference captures the resilience and collaboration of cities and regions shaping the future of urban mobility in an increasingly complex world.
Volume #5 brings together stories of transformation and innovation from across Europe and beyond, showcasing how cities are addressing the urgent challenges of climate change, equity, and technological evolution. In the wake of severe flooding events across Europe, political uncertainty with the re-election of Donald Trump, and the ongoing climate crisis, this publication underscores the necessity of perseverance and bold action to create sustainable, inclusive mobility systems.

Resilience and recovery in action
From metropolitan centres like Brussels and Budapest to smaller municipalities such as Lille, Arad, and Aalborg, Cities in motion 'Charting the Course' highlights inspiring examples of local authorities and communities forging new paths. Among these are the cities of Ukraine—Mariupol, Zviahel, Uman, and Lviv—which, despite the adversities of war, are actively rebuilding and reimagining urban mobility with support from POLIS and international partners.
'These cities represent the extraordinary resilience of communities rising to rebuild not just what was lost, but something better,' POLIS Secretary General Karen Vancluysen notes, demonstrating how urban mobility can be a cornerstone of sustainable recovery even in the face of immense challenges.
Voices of innovation and leadership
The magazine also features insights from leading mobility actors like BOLT and FREENOW, emphasising the importance of collaboration between technology providers and policymakers to drive sustainable and inclusive mobility solutions.
Interviews with keynote speakers for the upcoming Annual POLIS Conference 2024—Philippe Rode and Lars Strömgren—offer visions for a future where multimodality reigns, cars are no longer the default, and cities like Stockholm lead the way toward climate neutrality.
A call to action
With rich contributions from academics, activists, and policymakers, Cities in motion 'Charting the Course' provides a roadmap for those seeking to rethink the future of mobility. From policy reform and demand management to community-based solutions and cutting-edge technologies, this collection of stories demonstrates the power of perseverance and collaboration in driving meaningful change.
POLIS Secretary Karen Vancluysen encapsulates the spirit of the publication:
'Our cities face unprecedented challenges, but also unparalleled opportunities to reshape the way we live, move, and thrive. This magazine is both a celebration of those efforts and a call to action for everyone in the mobility ecosystem.'
