LENS

LENS (L-vehicles Emissions and Noise Mitigation Solutions) brought together a multidisciplinary group of 15 partners from 10 different EU Member States. It aimed to develop and promote best practices to address the problem of noise and emissions by improving the performance of future vehicles and minimising the impact of existing vehicles.

The growth of traffic and urban development increased exposure to noise and air pollution, affecting health and quality of life. LENS sought to support law enforcement bodies, cities and regulatory authorities in reducing the contribution of L-category vehicles (LVs) — mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles — to noise and air pollution.

The project examined emissions of greenhouse gases, including CO2, as well as health-relevant pollutants, including fine particles. LENS developed and promoted interventions and best practices to tackle noise and emissions, proposing solutions to improve the performance of future vehicles and to minimise the impact of those already in use.
The project applied techniques to monitor noise nuisance and emissions from LVs, provided recommendations on how to control the contribution of current and future LVs, examined emissions and noise performance under real driving conditions, and deployed methods to identify tampered vehicles. The research results provided information on various policy options for regulators, cities and authorities, including improvements to type-approval test procedures.
POLIS members Leuven and Paris, as well as Barcelona, were preliminarily selected as locations for field surveys and vehicle specification assessments; however, this did not preclude the selection of other locations during the course of LENS.

POLIS, as the leader of the communication, dissemination and exploitation activities, built momentum for more city-friendly LVs in terms of noise and emissions. Among other objectives, the project promoted knowledge transfer, carried out capacity-building activities, engaged a broader base of external cities and regions and ultimately translated its actions into tangible value and impact for the EU market and society.
