The EMW Award celebrates cities that demonstrate excellence in promoting sustainable urban mobility during the campaign's key week, held annually from 16 to 22 September. This campaign is the European Commission's flagship initiative for sustainable urban mobility.
The jury selected Bologna for its exceptional efforts in making sustainable mobility more accessible to the public. During EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK, the city organised a wide range of educational activities and information stands focused on sustainable urban mobility and public space transformation.
To engage younger participants, Bologna hosted interactive activities such as road safety simulations. The initiative also fostered strong community involvement by working closely with local private and citizen-led organisations. A key focus was on expanding activities beyond the city centre, including walking and cycling tours in suburban areas.
One of Bologna’s standout initiatives is Bologna 30, which has permanently reduced speed limits to 30 km/h on 70% of the city’s roads. The week’s celebrations concluded with a car-free day in the city’s historic and commercial centre.
