Public transport first: Key takeaways from the Just Transition Webinar
Public transport is at the foundation of mobility justice. Cities and regions can strengthen it and give it a first place to ensure it remains accessible, equitable, and resilient.
This is one of the key messages from the latest POLIS Just Transition x Access WG webinar, 'Public transport first: Strengthening the backbone of mobility justice', the third in the Just Transition Webinar Series on transport poverty and mobility justice.
Featuring Tanu Priya Uteng (TØI), Willeke Passmore (Vervoerregio Amsterdam), Wenche Pedersen & Kristoffer Westad (Ruter), and Jasper Bohlen (Bax Innovation), the webinar explored how inclusive planning, service innovation, and governance improvements can strengthen public transport networks, integrate new mobility solutions, and ensure that access to mobility is treated as a shared social right, leading the way in inclusive, just, and climate-friendly transport.
Speakers put forward guidelines from the CARIN-PT project, and initiatives and trainings in Amsterdam, Oslo, and Barcelona, showing how human-centred design, supportive organisational cultures, data-driven planning, and equitable innovation can create transport systems that enable independence, confidence, and fair access for all. The session showed that accessibility is more than infrastructure and that human support matters.
