SUMP ISTANBUL
Istanbul SUMP is reimagining mobility with a bold vision: fewer traffic jams, cleaner air, and seamless connections between public transport, walking, and cycling. The goal? Laying the foundation for a sustainable and resilient future!
Coordinated by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Istanbul SUMP presents a bold vision for the future of mobility in Istanbul, centred on an inclusive and innovative transport system. Prioritising both people and the environment, it aims to deliver a balanced mix of safe, integrated, accessible, and affordable mobility options. The plan is designed to respect Istanbul’s unique geography and rich historical heritage while paving the way for a sustainable and resilient future.
Its vision is built around nine key objectives, guiding the city's transport planning. To track progress, a set of indicators has been developed, each with an initial benchmark and defined targets. These indicators will be monitored at regular intervals throughout implementation. These key objectives include:
- Develop an accessible, affordable, integrated, and inclusive transport system.
- Ensure an environmentally sustainable transport network.
- Promote an economically sustainable and resilient mobility system.
- Enhance safety and security in transport and travel.
- Reduce traffic volumes, congestion, and dependence on private cars.
- Encourage a shift towards public transport.
- Promote walking and cycling as active travel modes.
- Support compact and polycentric urban development through transport planning.
- Establish an efficient city logistics system with minimal environmental impact.
This initiative will produce detailed implementation plans to drive forward the city’s sustainable mobility agenda. By achieving these objectives, Istanbul will move towards a more efficient, inclusive, and environmentally friendly transport system that enhances quality of life for all!
