PT Lab - Importance of public transport for young and older people
Public transport is a vital link to education, employment, healthcare, and social life. Yet, younger and older people often face distinct mobility challenges—whether it is affordability barriers for youth or accessibility concerns for seniors. The latest POLIS Public Transport Lab webinar explored these issues in depth.
Public transport is essential for social inclusion, yet younger and older people often face significant mobility challenges. While young people struggle with affordability and access to reliable services, older adults require transport solutions that support independence and accessibility. The latest edition of the POLIS Public Transport Lab webinar series explored these issues, highlighting key findings from recent research and pilot projects across Europe.
The webinar shared insights from Transport to Thrive, a joint study by University of the West of England Bristol and POLIS member Sustrans on youth mobility in England, which reveals how transport barriers impact education, employment, and social participation. It also examined innovative solutions such as Oslo’s Pink Bus, a demand-responsive service improving mobility for older residents, and POLIS member Vervoerregio Amsterdam’s volunteer transport pilot within the Interreg North-Sea project SMALL, which looks into making shared mobility accessible for all users, including people with reduced mobility.
These initiatives demonstrate the need for policies that prioritise inclusive and user-friendly public transport, ensuring that people of all ages can travel safely, affordably, and independently.
