'Neutral' transport, gendered poverty: Key takeaways from the Just Transition Webinar
Gender-sensitive mobility planning is essential to addressing transport poverty and advancing mobility justice. By recognising care-related travel, safety concerns, and unequal access patterns, transport systems can better serve diverse everyday realities.
This is one of the key messages from March's POLIS Just Transition Webinar '"Neutral" transport, gendered poverty', organised as part of the Just Transition Webinar Series on transport poverty and mobility justice.
Featuring Lotte Reijnders (Ipsos I&O), Annette Krüger and Francesca Brecha (#BIKEYGEES/YallaFAHR), Carolyn Quainton (Understood), and Maria Isabel Duran (Roma Servizi per la Mobilità), the webinar examined how gender-sensitive planning, community-based mobility programmes, safety interventions, and data-driven governance can reduce inequalities in access and improve everyday mobility experiences.
The session demonstrated how mobility systems that appear neutral often reproduce inequality, and how embedding gender perspectives in planning, infrastructure design, and service delivery can lead to more inclusive and effective transport outcomes.
