Designing for real choice: Key takeaways from the Just Transition Webinar

Infrastructure matters. How we design streets and public spaces can empower vulnerable groups, reduce transport poverty, and make urban mobility more inclusive.

This was the central message of the latest POLIS Just Transition x Active Travel & Health Webinar, 'Designing for Real Choice—Infrastructure as an Enabler', which brought together experts from across Europe.

Featuring Judit Rab and Gergely Kofrán (BKK Budapest), Lily Scarponi (Transform Transport, Milan), Maria Risom Laursen (City of Copenhagen), and Mario Alves (International Federation of Pedestrians), the webinar explored how walking, cycling, and wheeling infrastructure shapes travel behaviour, supports public transport use, and improves urban life.

Speakers highlighted strategies and tools from Budapest, Copenhagen, Milan, and Braga, demonstrating how safe, accessible, and inclusive street design can expand everyday mobility choices. From walkability indices and user-centered route planners to rebalancing space in historic city centres, the session showed that small, targeted interventions can have significant impacts on equity, safety, and quality of life.
