Riga: Adding fun to the mobility mix
The EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Award celebrates municipalities that have implemented outstanding activities to promote sustainable urban mobility during the campaign’s main week of 16-22 September.
The EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Award went to Riga for its innovative and creative approach to active and sustainable mobility. The Latvian capital has organised a wide range of fun and educational activities during last year’s EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK. These included a ‘Tweed Ride’ with elegantly dressed riders on vintage bicycles, Zumba classes for public transport users, the ‘Riga Rolls’ campaign rewarding walkers, cyclists, and rollerbladers, step challenges and mobility competition for schools, families, and residents, and conferences and workshops featuring cycling and urban planning experts to raise awareness.
The city also implemented permanent measures such as new bicycle infrastructure and 30 km/h zones, demonstrating its commitment to safer and more people-centred streets.
The city of Braga (Portugal) also received a special mention from the jury for its continued commitment to the initiative. Braga won the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Award in 2022 and has been a finalist again since then, demonstrating its dedication to putting forward new and diverse initiatives and permanent measures to promote active mobility and shared transport to both residents and visitors.
South Tyrol combines tourism and sustainable mobility
The Autonomous Province of Bolzano/Bozen - South Tyrol has received the MOBILITYACTION Award, which acknowledges excellence in mobility management planning solutions submitted by businesses, institutions, civil society organisations, and citizen initiatives.
South Tyrol impressed the jury with its initiative, the Südtirol Alto Adige Guest Pass, which integrates sustainable mobility into the tourism experience. The Guest Pass is included in nearly all tourist stays and offers unlimited access to regional public transport, including shuttles and selected cable cars.
The initiative encourages visitors to leave their cars behind by making sustainable transport the default option. This not only has a positive environmental impact but also fosters a culture of shared mobility, beneficial to both visitors and local communities.
