POLIS and Brussels Green Deal unite to showcase urban logistics innovations

From bold policy action to pioneering logistics tech, the message from 'Navigating the Last-Mile: Innovations in Zero-Emission Urban Freight' was clear: clean, efficient urban logistics is no longer a distant goal—it is happening now.

Co-organised by POLIS, the Brussels Metropolitan Region, and the European Technology Platform ALICE, the 11 and 12 June event brought together over 50 cities, regions, experts, and innovators, as well as members of the Brussels Green Deal on urban logistics at the POLIS offices in Brussels. Across keynotes, case studies, and site visits, participants explored how collaboration, data-driven planning, and new delivery models are driving the shift to zero-emission logistics.

Transforming city logistics

Kicking off the event, Raffaele Vergnani (POLIS) and Louise Duprez (Brussels Environment) highlighted the strength of long-standing partnerships with ALICE, while a keynote from DG MOVE of the European Commission reinforced the call for integrated planning between urban and long-haul logistics under the revised TEN-T Regulation.

Throughout the event, participants shared how innovation, data, and collaboration are transforming city logistics:

  • Madrid’s Maria Eugenia Martinez presented the city’s microhub strategy and the UNCHAIN project, integrating digital curbside management via tools like DUM360.

  • Dries van Bever (IMEC) showcased Ghent’s work on the DISCO project, enabling smarter logistics through access rule integration.

  • Stan de Caluwe explained Utrecht’s multimodal logistics shift, making use of canals, zero-emission zones, and car-free neighbourhoods.

  • Aletta Buki highlighted Budapest's pilots on micro-consolidation and curbside management under GRETA and HungAiry.

  • Moncef Semichi (Île-de-France) detailed the region’s bold decarbonisation efforts, including Box2Home (waterway Ikea deliveries in Paris) and Batail Log (shared construction logistics by river).

The event also featured insights from industry leaders and innovators such as La Poste Groupe, Port of Brussels, Belgian Cycle Logistics Federation, CALSTART, Clem', Urban Radar, and ASTER.

To close, participants toured several Brussels-based logistics initiatives making zero-emission freight a reality today:

  • Urbike – a cooperative leading in cyclo‑logistics with cargo bike deliveries
  • BD Media | BD Logistics – delivering fresh, chilled and frozen goods by bicycle
  • Stalem – a 2,000 m² logistics hub recovering and recycling retail waste
