SLOCAT publishes more chapters of the Transport, Climate and Sustainability Global Status Report

SLOCAT launches new chapters of the fourth edition of the Global Status Report on Sustainable, Low-Carbon Transport. Designed to provide practical tools, this release focuses on climate and sustainability responses in transport sub-sectors and modes and on the transport-energy connection.

SLOCAT, the partnership on sustainable, low-carbon transport, promotes collaborative knowledge and action to accelerate the transformation of transport systems and services worldwide.

Its Global Status Report (GSR) gathers the latest data, trends and policy developments shaping sustainable transport across the globe. The report examines key challenges and opportunities in the sector, covering transport demand, usage and accessibility, climate and sustainability trends, as well as policy and investment developments. It aims to equip decision-makers and stakeholders with a clear assessment of the current landscape and the insights needed to drive faster, bolder climate and sustainability action in transport.

More than 300 experts from over 200 organisations worldwide contribute to the GSR, making it a truly diverse and multidisciplinary effort.

Adding a sharper sustainability perspective

The fourth edition introduces new chapters focusing on climate and sustainability responses across transport sub-sectors and modes, as well as on the transport–energy nexus. These explore topics such as freight transport and logistics, integrated transport planning, walking, cycling, public transport, informal transport, rail, road transport, second-hand vehicles, aviation, shipping, transport energy sources, and road vehicle electrification.

Designed for practical use, each chapter analyses evidence, showcases effective solutions, highlights current trends and partnerships, and provides tools for action that are conscious of both people and the planet.

This edition also introduces several new modules:

  • 'Transport pathways to reach climate and sustainability goals', examining how national and sub-national governments and businesses are adapting their transport pathways to meet climate and sustainability objectives;

  • 'Regional overviews: trends and policy development', providing an evidence base that identifies progress and remaining gaps in regional action;

  • 'Country factsheets: national trends and analysis', presenting key transport data and insights from 31 countries worldwide;

  • 'Climate and sustainability responses in transport sub-sectors and modes', offering an in-depth look at climate and sustainability responses across different transport modes;

  • 'Transport and energy', exploring the strong links between transport energy sources and road vehicle electrification;

  • 'Economics, finance, and capacity building for transformative change in transport', analysing how sustainable transport can be financed amid constrained public budgets, and the role of capacity building in driving transformative change.

An additional module, ‘Shaping the Just Transition’, along with a complementary publication, ‘Takeaways for Decision Makers’, will be released on 15 October 2025.
