ACEM and FIM launch EU campaign to promote safer motorcycling

The European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (ACEM) and the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) have launched a major European awareness campaign: ‘Learn – Ride – Enjoy – Repeat’.

This campaign aims to highlight the value of high-quality voluntary motorcycle training as a key step towards safer riding, both for beginners and experienced motorcyclists. By raising awareness and encouraging participation, ACEM and FIM seek to enhance road safety across Europe.

Promoting safer and more responsible riding

Powered two-wheelers (PTWs), such as motorcycles and mopeds, have a great potential in sustainable urban mobility, bridging the gap between cars and bicycles. Not only are their size and agility ideal for urban travel, but they also play a key role in reducing CO2 emissions, air pollution, and noise, particularly in cities.

However, road safety remains a critical challenge. According to a 2023 report from the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), PTW user road deaths have been decreasing, as data show a 25% reduction between 2011 and 2011. Despite this progress, motorcyclists still represent a disproportionately high share of road deaths. Many accidents and near-accident situations involve visibility issues, where other road users fail to notice approaching motorcycles or misjudge their speed and behaviour.

Motorcyclists can take proactive steps to reduce risks, and training enables them to sharpen their hazard perception and risk awareness skills, which are key factors in avoiding potentially dangerous situations.

For these reasons, voluntary post-license training is essential. Research suggests that many motorcycle crashes could be prevented or their impact significantly reduced if riders enhance cognitive abilities like road reading and traffic anticipation alongside mastering essential motor skills.

An inclusive road safety culture

ACEM and FIM encourage European motorcyclists at the beginning of the riding season to take high-quality voluntary training. POLIS supports the initiative as responsible riding contributes to making European roads safer for everyone.

‘Learn – Ride – Enjoy – Repeat’ encourages all riders to take the next step by engaging with certified, high-quality training programmes. The campaign builds on the success of the European Motorcycle Training Quality Label, which recognises excellence in post-licence training schemes across Europe.

By empowering riders with knowledge and practical skills, this initiative aims to highlight the value of voluntary motorcycle training as a vital step toward safer riding. Riders can enroll in high-quality training programs, gaining access to the tools and knowledge they need to ride safely and responsibly.
