EAFO Webinar: Consumer Monitor 2025 – EU Drivers’ View on Electric Cars

The European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO) will host its second dedicated webinar on 26 March 2026 (12:15–13:00 CET) to officially present the EAFO Consumer Monitor 2025 – EU Drivers’ View on Electric Cars.

Commissioned by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE), the Consumer Monitor is a new EU-wide survey that provides insight into how drivers perceive battery electric vehicles (BEVs), their readiness to adopt them, and the factors influencing consumer decisions in the transition towards zero-emission mobility.

The 2025 edition analyses responses from more than 3,000 licensed drivers across all EU-27 Member States, offering a comprehensive perspective on consumer attitudes, expectations, and perceived barriers related to electric cars. By examining the relationship between perceptions, practical feasibility, and purchase intentions, the study aims to better understand the consumer dimension of Europe’s transport decarbonisation.

What to expect?

The lunchtime webinar will present the main insights from the report and open a discussion on their implications for policy, industry, and consumers.

  • Introduction and opening remarks – European Commission (DG MOVE)
  • Presentation of the EAFO Consumer Monitor 2025 findings
  • Panel discussion with invited stakeholders representing public authorities, consumer organisations, industry, and EV drivers
  • Questions and discussion with participants

The discussion will be moderated by Prof. Joeri Van Mierlo, Head of the MOBI Electromobility Research Centre at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Confirmed and invited panellists include representatives from:

  • Swedish Energy Agency – Gustaf Länn
  • City of Barcelona – Dr. Ángel López Rodríguez
  • BEUC – The European Consumer Organisation – Robin Loos
  • German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) – Dr. Stefanie Wolff
  • Elektrische Rijders (VER) / Global EV Drivers’ Alliance (GEVA) – Ellen Hiep

Together, the panel will reflect on the survey results from the perspectives of public policy, consumer advocacy, industry and EV drivers, exploring what the findings mean for accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles in Europe.

Why this matters

While vehicle technology and charging infrastructure are advancing rapidly, consumer perceptions and everyday feasibility remain central to the transition to electric mobility. Understanding how drivers evaluate electric vehicles, what influences their purchase decisions, and what barriers they experience is essential for designing effective policies and market strategies.

The EAFO Consumer Monitor contributes to this understanding by providing an EU-wide evidence base that complements EAFO’s monitoring of vehicle markets and alternative fuels infrastructure.

This webinar is relevant for a broad range of stakeholders and decision-makers, including:

  • National and local public authorities
  • Policy analysts and academic researchers
  • Transport, energy, and infrastructure professionals
  • Consumer organisations
  • Anyone interested in alternative fuels market trends in Europe
