Rome expands on-demand public transport service to seven new areas

Following the successful pilot launched in the Massimina neighbourhood in 2024, Rome is significantly expanding its on-demand public transport service, ClicBus, bringing flexible mobility to seven additional low-density areas across the city from July 2026.

Operated by ATAC and developed by POLIS member Roma Servizi per la Mobilità, ClicBus uses accessible eight-seater minibuses that passengers can book through a mobile app, web platform, or call centre. Rather than following fixed routes, vehicles adapt to users' requests, connecting residents with nearby public transport hubs, including metro stations, tram stops, railway stations, hospitals, schools, and commercial centres.

From 6 July, the service will become available in Paglian Casale–Santa Palomba–Falcognana, Cerquette, Trigoria, and Castello della Cecchignola–Fonte Meravigliosa. A second expansion phase will follow on 13 July, covering Valle Borghesiana–Lago Regillo, Cinquina–Casal Monastero, and Corcolle–San Vittorino.

Take it and multiply it

The expansion builds on the experience gained in Massimina, where ClicBus was introduced as a pilot to address the last-mile challenge in an area with limited conventional public transport. By providing demand-responsive connections to Aurelia railway station, the service demonstrated how flexible transport can complement high-capacity public transport rather than replace it.

Announcing the expansion, Rome's Deputy Mayor for Mobility, Eugenio Patanè, described ClicBus as a tailored mobility solution for lower-density neighbourhoods. Residents will be able to book a minibus connecting them to the nearest strategic interchange, including metro, tram, and rail services, creating a more convenient and responsive public transport offer.

Passengers can reserve journeys up to seven days in advance, or as little as 30 minutes before departure, using the ClicBus app. The platform also allows users to choose between different route options, book trips for passengers with reduced mobility, modify or cancel reservations, and request the first available vehicle.

Unlike the initial pilot phase, the service now operates under Rome's standard public transport fare. Passengers can travel using existing Metrebus Roma tickets and season passes, while Tap&Go contactless payment is also available on board. Tickets remain valid across the wider public transport network, encouraging seamless multimodal journeys.

The rollout reflects Rome's broader efforts to improve accessibility in peripheral neighbourhoods while strengthening connections to its public transport network. By complementing fixed-route services with demand-responsive mobility, the city is testing a model that could help improve coverage, reduce car dependency, and make public transport a more attractive option in areas where traditional bus services are often less efficient.
