2020 Annual Polis Conference

The POLIS Annual Conference provides an opportunity for cities and regions to showcase their transport achievement to large audience of mobility experts, practitioners and decision makers.

The 2020 POLIS Annual Conference took place virtually from 30 November to 3 December.

Winning hearts and minds, accelerating sustainable change

What are the underlying mechanisms of behavioural change? Is COVID-19 a life-changing moment that offers an opportunity for adapting deeply rooted mobility habits and moving onto a fast track towards sustainable change? What are the underlying socio-economic aspects that determine the acceptance of new mobility measures by citizens? Or do we just need political will and courage?

In the opening plenary session we explored these questions with Daniel Helldén, Vice-Mayor of Stockholm, Giulio Mattioli, transport researcher at the Dortmund Technical University, Lucy Saunders of Healthy Streets, and Mirjam van Coillie, Director of Marketing & Innovation from Dutch bike manufacturer Gazelle.

The keynote speaker was Maarten Tjallingii, Dutch former professional cyclist and advocate of sustainable mobility.

Green dealing for green healing

In the closing plenary session, we discussed the need for a green recovery from the current health crisis.

The European Commissioner for Transport, Adina Vălean, gave a keynote speech about how to reach the transport ambitions linked to the European Green Deal and the urban dimension of the Strategy for a Sustainable and Smart Mobility.

Our keynote speaker was Robin Chase, co-founder and former CEO of Zipcar, the largest carsharing company in the world. On our panel we welcomed Mohamed Ridouani, Mayor of Leuven, Harriët Tiemens, Deputy Mayor of Nijmegen, David Belliard, Deputy Mayor of Paris, Anabel Diaz Calderon, Uber and the European Coordinator for Road Safety and Sustainable Mobility, Matthew Baldwin.

Urban Mobility Green Deal Makers Summit

In the Urban Mobility Green Deal-Makers Summit, city and regional stakeholders engaged with EU representatives around how local and regional transport can contribute to the EU Green Deal.

At the Summit, local and regional authorities presented how they can contribute to the success of the European Green Deal. The Urban Green Deal-Makers Pledge sets out cities’ and regions’ commitment to accelerate the shift to sustainable urban mobility and to become frontrunners for the European Union’s climate goals.

Presentations from the conference are now available! Soon, we will be publishing video recordings from parallel sessions as well.
