New Fluctuo report says Europeans spent €3.1 billion on shared mobility services in 2022

Fluctuo, the leading aggregator of shared mobility data, has released an analysis of 100 European cities in its latest Shared Mobility Index.

The report finds that, with a total of 850,000 shared vehicles available in Europe, 550 million trips were made across 2022, creating some €3.1 billion in revenue.

Highlights

The report highlighted that:

  • The European shared mobility market is worth €3.1 billion
  • There are 850,000 shared vehicles available across the continent
  • Since 2018, 600,000 dockless bikes, scooters and mopeds have been deployed
  • In 2022, an estimated 550m trips were made (1.5m daily trips on average)
  • Nearly 200 new services were launched / 93 were paused or stopped.

Putting together data from 100 cities, the report showed that:

  • Of the 100 cities monitored, 74% have a station-based bike scheme; 57% have free-floating bikes; 87% shared scooters, 37% mopeds and 62% cars
  • On average, there are 82 shared vehicles available per 10,000 inhabitants
  • Ridership grew 36% in 2022 vs 2021. Station-based bikes ridership grew 15%, free-floating bikes 230%; scooters 46%; mopeds 26% and cars 10%
  • Fleets grew 45% in 2022 compared to 2021. Station-based bike fleets grew 10%, free-floating bikes 118%; scooters 63%; mopeds 10% and cars 17%.


ESMI, the European Shared Mobility Index

The latest European Shared Mobility Index - Annual Review gives an overview of the entire European market and an analysis of 100 European cities selected to highlight diversity in size, geography and market characteristics.

The Index encompasses shared bikes, scooters, mopeds and cars. Ride-hailing services (e.g. Uber, FreeNow), car-pooling (e.g. Klaxit, BlaBlaCar) and long-term rental services (e.g. Swapfiets) are not included. As regards car sharing, only rentals by the minute, hour or day are included. Multi-day rentals are not included.

Vehicle and trip data was sourced directly from operators, open data sources, mobile applications and public announcements. Industry averages and some data extrapolation were used to fill the remaining data gaps. Companies who contributed financially to this report have not received any favourable treatment.
