Fluctuo releases latest European Shared Mobility Index

Fluctuo releases latest European Shared Mobility Index (ESMI)! Covering Q2 2022, the indicators show how shared mobility is positively thriving despite the socioeconomic difficulties we are facing in this year.

Published by Fluctuo, their most recent index on European Shared Mobility is now available! Focusing on the second quarter of 2022, the index gives an overview of the shared mobility market on a quarterly basis for 22 locations that were chosen based on variation in size, geography, and market features. The Index encompasses shared bikes, scooters, mopeds and cars. Ride-hailing services (e.g. Uber), car-pooling (e.g. BlaBlaCar) and long-term rental services (e.g. Swapfiets) are not included.

A stronger need for shared mobility

The Index interestingly reveals all on how city people still employ shared mobility in spite of socioeconomic pressures. In order to meet their transportation needs, Europeans are continuously turning to shared mobility as they deal with inflation and rising fuel costs, as it is seen as more cost-effective and better tailored to urban travel.

Here are some interesting facts from the market overview:

  • There are over 380,000 shared vehicles in the 22 cities monitored.
  •  In the 22 cities analysed, scooters represent 51% of all vehicles, docked bikes 20%, free-floating bikes 13%, mopeds 8%, and cars 8%.
  •  Shared mobility ridership is up 49% from last year’s levels.
  •  Fleet sizes have increased by 40% since the same period in 2021.

Looking specifically at cities, some of the Index's analysis revealed amazing facts about our POLIS members, such as:

  • Berlin has the most shared vehicles (over 50,000 vehicles).
  • Paris now has over 7,000 free-floating bikes.
  • Brussels placed 3rd in this analysis. Brussels, however, saw the biggest growth in scooter trips.
  • Milan recorded the 3rd most bike and moped trips per capita, and also witnessed the 2nd biggest growth in moped trips between Q1 and Q2 2022.
  • Rome witnessed the largest growth in moped trips from Q1 to Q2 2022.
  • The growth in bike trips in Prague was larger than in any other city.
