North Rhine-Westphalia
North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is the most densely populated state in Germany. With a population of 18 million, it plays a central role in urban, regional, and cross-border mobility. NRW includes 27 designated urban nodes (cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants) within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), 12 of which are located in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area.
The Ministry of the Environment, Nature, and Transport promotes integrated, sustainable mobility in cities and wider functional urban areas, while also improving connectivity between larger and smaller cities as well as rural regions. The state works closely with its neighbouring Dutch provinces to enhance cross-border connections and strengthen the wider transnational European network.
Within the POLIS network, NRW seeks to align local, regional, national, and European priorities in order to advance integrated sustainable mobility.
