The State of Hessen combines unique European capacities as a financial, transportation, research and innovation location. As a strong state in the Federal Republic of Germany and a strong region in the European Union, Hessen actively participates in lawmaking at a European level. Through its participation in the Upper House of the German Parliament (Bundesrat), the European Conference of Ministers (ECM) and the Committee of the Regions (CoR) as well as its formal and informal contacts to European institutions. On several different levels – in Brussels, Wiesbaden and Berlin – the State government thus very successfully pursues European political projects.

Hessen Trade & Invest GmbH (HTAI) is the economic development agency of the state of Hesse. HTAI's task is to sustainably develop Hesse as a business and technology location in order to consolidate and expand its competitiveness. Through targeted activities, the HTAI contributes to maintaining and increasing the prosperity and standard of living of all citizens in Hesse in the long term. As a specialist centre for sustainable mobility planning in Hesse, they support Hessian municipalities and districts in all aspects of sustainable, integrated mobility planning. This is based on the European Guidelines for Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMP).

The State of Hessen is/was involved in EU projects: ENDURANCE, CIVITAS PROSPERITY and e-smartec.
