POLIS x CIVITAS Forum 2026 Workshop: From data to decisions – Implementing SUMPs

On 15 September 2026, POLIS, together with CERTH-HIT, the Region of Central Macedonia (RCM), and the Municipality of Oslo, will host a workshop on data and decision-making in SUMP implementation, as a side event to the CIVITAS Forum 2026 in Thessaloniki, Greece.

The workshop will explore how Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) can evolve to better address Functional Urban Areas (FUAs), improve mobility data collection, and strengthen the implementation phase through clearer guidance on the use of collected data. The discussion will build on the updated SUMP guidelines and indicators, including emerging mobility trends, the role of integrated public transport systems, and a stronger focus on urban logistics as an integral component of SUMPs.

Special attention will be given to how data supports decision-making in multimodal transport planning, network integration, and evidence-based policy development, as well as to its role in experimentation and the scaling of mobility innovations in complex urban systems.

The workshop will foster an open dialogue on how SUMPs can evolve under the new European Guidelines, supporting the development of evidence-based, adaptive, and resilient sustainable mobility systems. It will combine short expert inputs with interactive roundtable discussions, creating space for exchange between policymakers, operators, planners, and researchers. Insights, knowledge, good practices, and pilot activities will be shared from the REFOCUS and TERRAIN projects, the BSR Urban Mobility Platform, and MITHOS.
