2nd MONA Webinar: Shaping sustainable travel & tourism

Join the MONA project on 13 March 2025 from 10:00 to 11:45 CET for its second webinar focusing on influencing travel and transport behaviour for more sustainable tourism practices.

The future of sustainable tourism depends on encouraging environmentally friendly travel behaviour both to and within destinations. Behavioural strategies such as default choices, choice architecture and framing can make sustainable transport options more accessible and rewarding, ensuring greater adoption with minimal effort. When integrated into tourism services and policies, these strategies increase both effectiveness and impact.

The role of transport in sustainable tourism

As one of the largest contributors to carbon emissions, transport plays a crucial role in the environmental impact of tourism. Tourists' travel choices are influenced by personal habits, transport availability and contextual factors such as travel companions, travel purpose and transport mode. These choices often differ from daily routines due to differences in transport efficiency between home and destination.

Intra-destination travel also affects environmental quality, influenced by transport options and perceived costs/benefits. However, many tourists separate their holidays from their everyday sustainability concerns. Targeted interventions can encourage greener travel choices and help reduce the environmental footprint of tourism.

About MONA: promoting sustainable mobility in nature areas

Launched in 2023, MONA aims to promote sustainable tourism in nature areas in north-western Europe, benefiting local economies, the environment and visitors. The project encourages modal shift, promotes sustainable transport, implements inclusive route planning and promotes environmentally friendly travel behaviour.

What to expect from the webinar

This session, part of the MONA capacity building programme, will bring together key stakeholders and experts from across Europe to explore sustainable visitor mobility planning for tourism destinations. Participants will gain practical solutions to improve accessibility, reduce environmental impact and create seamless travel experiences in rural and natural areas.
