France investigates potential to make bicycle main mode of travel after lockdown

Plans are being formulated to make cycling a main mode of travel to get people moving after lockdown measures end in France.

According to newspaper reports, Pierre Serne, who was formerly in charge of transport in Ile-de-France, has been asked by the national government to formulate plans to encourage the use of bikes as a means of getting around for daily journeys. This is considered to be an important way of allowing people to get around whilst maintaining social distance in the weeks following the easing of lockdown measures.

Such a move could have significant benefits for towns and cities, particularly if these habits are maintained after the COVID-19 crisis eases off.
