England eases rules on banning traffic to aid social distancing

English councils are set to benefit from a loosening of rules around banning traffic from streets in an effort to encourage social distancing.

Regulations around applying for street closures will be relaxed to allow councils across England to provide more space for walking and cycling. This comes in response to a greater number of people getting around on foot and by bike during lockdown measures, during which public transport has been restricted.

The process for applying for street closures to traffic can be long and complex under normal circumstances. However, these new temporary rules from the UK Government will allow councils to introduce temporary traffic bans on certain streets much more quickly.

This will provide more space for people to walk and cycle whilst maintaining safe social distance.
