Calls for Canadian cities to close streets to traffic to aid COVID-19 response

There have been calls for two Canadian cities to explore the potential of closing streets to vehicles to provide more space for pedestrians and cyclists to aid the cities' response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vancouver has recently announced its intention to create more public space in its centre in an effort to create more space for people whilst maintaining a safe physical distance to avoid the spread of the coronavirus.

This follows on from other cities which have implemented similar measures to make it easier for people to spend more time outside and get around on foot and by bike.

Calls have been made for Toronto to follow suit, but city officials have announced they do not currently have plans to close streets to traffic.
