'Trolley90 and its sustainable future': Mobility experts celebrate in Budapest this November

On 9 November 2023, the trolleybus system of Budapest will celebrate its 90th anniversary. To mark the occasion, the Interreg CE4CE project, MOBILISSIMUS, and BKV Ltd. invite mobility experts from across Hungary and the rest of Europe for a meeting of the minds.

The conference will feature a visit to the Budapest trolleybus depot and an engaging discussion on the future sustainability of Budapest’s transport.

The trolleybus: a combination of bus and tram that you can find waiting on many street corners in Budapest. Though uncommon in most European cities, the trolleybus has become a permanent feature of Budapest's urban landscape since it first appeared in 1933. After it was destroyed during WWII, Budapest's trolleybus made a comeback. Today, the network of trolleybuses in Budapest includes 15 lines. While it may never have superseded Budapest's buses in terms of overall usage, the trolleybus remains an integral part of the city's transport ecosystem.

New avenues, new perspectives

To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the trolleybus, Interreg CE4CE, MOBILISSIMUS, and BKV Ltd. are inviting mobility experts from across Europe to Hungary's capital this November. The conference will aim to explore future pathways for the evolution of Budapest's beloved trolleybus, looking in all directions for insight and inspiration.

Different perspectives on the future of the trolleybus will be considered, as will new technologies and strategies for reducing its ecological footprint. The conference will undoubtedly be a unique opportunity for peer-to-peer discussion for anyone interested in the relationship between circular economy principles and the transport systems of Europe's cities.

Thanks to the participation of Interreg CE4CE, MOBILISSIMUS, and BKV Ltd., it will be possible not only to learn more about the specific history of Budapest's transport system but also to relate the city's progress on sustainable mobility to the efforts of other cities in Central Europe.
