Uzhorod
Uzhhorod, situated in western Ukraine near the Slovakian border, is actively pursuing sustainable transport and mobility initiatives to enhance urban living and address environmental concerns.
In February 2021, Uzhhorod participated in the CLIMADAM project, focusing on developing a Sustainable Transport Model for the city and its surrounding areas. This initiative, supported by experts from Ukraine and Slovakia, aims to create a transport model that incorporates sustainable mobility practices, drawing on the experiences of regions like Košice. The project seeks to improve traffic flow and transport infrastructure by implementing effective sustainable measures.
Uzhhorod's commitment to sustainable mobility is further demonstrated through its participation in European Mobility Week 2024. Alongside other Ukrainian cities, Uzhhorod engaged in activities promoting greener and smarter transport solutions, aligning with the week's theme of "Shared Public Space." These efforts underscore the city's dedication to encouraging behavioural changes in favour of walking, cycling, and public transport, thereby reducing pollution, noise, and congestion.
While Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) are still emerging in Ukraine and not mandated by national legislation, Uzhhorod's proactive involvement in projects like CLIMADAM and European Mobility Week reflects a growing recognition of modern approaches to mobility planning. By embracing sustainable transport models and participating in international mobility initiatives, Uzhhorod is taking significant steps towards creating a more efficient, accessible, and environmentally friendly urban environment for its residents.
