MONA webinar: Accessibility in nature areas; leaving no one behind
On 10 September 2026 between 14:30 and 16:00 CEST, the MONA project will host its sixth webinar, centred around accessibility in nature areas.
Interreg MONA aims to promote sustainable tourism in and around nature areas in North-West Europe. Sustainable mobility in these areas, however, means little if it does not work for everyone.
Access to nature is not just a matter of convenience; it is a matter of equality. When physical, digital and social barriers are removed, people of all backgrounds and abilities can enjoy outdoor activities on equal terms, with real benefits for their mental and physical health. Research consistently shows that contact with nature supports wellbeing, yet many people, including older adults, people with a range of mobility and sensory needs and those facing social or economic barriers, are prevented from experiencing these benefits. Designing for accessibility does not only serve those who need it most; it tends to produce better environments and services for everyone.
In their efforts to move towards sustainable mobility, it is important to make sure no one gets left behind. A modal shift can only be considered successful if it takes into account everyone and is inclusive of their mobility needs.
This webinar will bring together examples from nature areas to discuss what accessibility means in practice. Rather than focusing on a single dimension, the conversation will cover the full range of barriers that can prevent people from accessing nature areas, from physical access for people with a range of mobility and sensory needs to considerations around age, economic situation and social background.
