COVID-19 mobility impact sees rise in popularity of cars in China

New data has revealed a growing preference for travelling by car in China following the COVID-19 outbreak.

Research revealed in March by IPSOS showed an increasing intention in Chinese consumers to buy a car in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, which has caused mass disruption to public transport and raised concerns about the safety of this mode during a virus outbreak.

Private cars also jumped to the most favoured mode of transport in the poll, with public transport falling.

This data is cause for concern for urban mobility in the aftermath of COVID-19, as a mass move away from public transport towards private car use could cause serious problems for cities and regions including congestion, air pollution, carbon emissions and safety issues.
