POLIS joins European transport organisations calling for more EU transport budget

POLIS is joining a group of 48 European transport organisations across the entire European mobility spectrum urging the Council and the European Parliament for a robust funding mechanism for transport in the upcoming review of the Multi-Annual Financial Framework. Find out more below!

The transport sector plays a pivotal role in addressing Europe's environmental challenges. Only with a strong transport sector at its core will Europe reach its climate and resilience goals and safeguard its supply chain sovereignty.

The significant oversubscription of the current Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) transport budget highlights the high ambitions and challenges of the transport sector that are not being adequately met with EU support. European leaders and policymakers must recognise this moment as an opportunity to reverse the trend of underfunding and aim for a higher standard.

That is why POLIS is joining a group of 48 European transport organisations across the entire European mobility spectrum to form a coalition for more EU budget for transport. From European maritime and inland port authorities to airport operators, from inland waterway/maritime/rail/road/air transport companies to infrastructure managers, operators, suppliers, and more are all coming together to urge the Council and the European Parliament for a robust funding mechanism for transport in the upcoming review of the Multi-Annual Financial Framework.

“The transport challenges we face in the next financial period are substantial. Cities and regions are at the heart of the massive mobility transition and they are the authorities that will build new infrastructures, implement charging and refuelling facilities, and install advanced ITS. While they also substantially contribute themselves in financial terms, they need more EU budget for transport, to be able to further initiate bigger, better and necessary projects. In addition, the way the budget is spent needs to be adapted to the specific needs and capacities of cities and regions. We will engage with the European Institutions to get that important message across.” - Karen Vancluysen, Secretary General, POLIS.

A campaign was officially launched at the Connecting Europe Days 2024, where a leaflet featuring key recommendations was handed out to Magda Kopczyńska, Director General, DG MOVE.
