Covenant of Mayors: 2015 Signing Ceremony will be held in Brussels on 15 October

This new Covenant of Mayors:

  • will feature a new target of at least 40% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030;
  • will include both the mitigation and adaptation pillars through the integration of the Covenant of Mayors and Mayors Adapt;
  • will reach a global scope, opening up participation to local authorities worldwide.

This new Covenant of Mayors aims to step up the momentum towards low-carbon, resilient and inclusive energy systems as well as towards a climate-resilient Europe. It will support the EU’s position in the negotiations on an international agreement on climate change and be a key milestone on the road to the COP 21 in Paris at the end of this year.

This event will take place during the Open Days - European Week of Regions and Cities. It will highlight the central role the local level plays in the energy transition and the fight against climate change and acknowledge their efforts in improving their preparedness and capacity to respond to the unavoidable adverse climate impacts.

Registration will open on 3 August 2015 on the Covenant of Mayors website (www.eumayors.eu), with details of the programme and practical information available there.
