Are you a Supermodal? Photo competition on sustainable travel for UK’s youth

The UK's new nationwide photo competition encourages young people to show off their use of sustainable transport and celebrate their status as Supermodals.

Following the experiences of previous campaigns which have focused on the rational arguments of individual and communal benefits to little effect, this pilot campaign seeks to avoid traditional messages and instead focuses on the lifestyle angle of sustainable transport, playing upon the recent growth in fashionable trends in urban commuting.

Participants can enter the competition until Monday 28 October 2013. At the end of the entry period, a jury comprised of celebrity supporters and leading officials from the field of sustainable transport will select two winners from the 100 most popular entries as decided by a public vote. Both winners will receive a two-night trip (by train) for two to Amsterdam.

Background

The EU's Sustainable Urban Mobility Campaign aims to promote the advantages of combining different modes of transport under the slogan ‘Do the Right Mix.’ The campaign runs in 31 countries, which includes six countries who receive targeted support: Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Romania, and the UK.

Each of these target countries hosted activities during European Mobility Week. In the UK, the ‘We are Supermodels’ competition was launched to encourage people to make small changes to the way they travel. In Greece and Italy a ‘Do the Right Mix’ video was shown in metro and railway stations, and Sofia, Bulgaria, ran a ‘20 City Points’ game where participants could discover new way of getting around the city.

SUMP Award

The SUMP Award is also presented within the framework of the Commission's Sustainable Urban Mobility campaign. The 2012 award focused on stakeholder and citizen participation in the SUMP, where Polis member Toulouse was among the three finalists. This year's edition will look at the integration of economic, social, and environmental policy criteria in SUMPs. The 2014 award will look at monitoring the implementation to improve the SUMP.

This year's SUMP Award is now open for cities and regions. Applications for the Award of EUR 10 000 can be submitted online. Deadline is 1 November 2013.
