30 English Councils planning e-scooter pilots

English councils are preparing to launch shared e-scooter schemes following signals from the UK Department for Transport that restrictions on the use of the scooters will be eased.

The Department for Transport is expected to publish its framework for e-scooters next week, which will give details of how the system of rented scooters will work. Privately owned scooters will still be banned.

It is hoped that shared e-scooters will help to ease pressure on public transport, which is due to face capacity restrictions to ensure safe physical distancing.

The UK is behind many European countries in implementing shared e-scooters, but this new development could see shared mobility take off in the UK.
