Automated Vehicles

Automated vehicles are driverless vehicles, generally operating in collective mode (like public transport). There are various types of automated systems, including Personal Rapid Transit (PRT), Group Rapid Transit and Cybercars.

These systems either operate on dedicated infrastructure (PRT and GRT) or on existing roads with other road users (Cybercars). The fact that automated systems are demand responsive and can offer point to point travel are deemed to make them very suitable in areas of low and/or dispersed travel demand. Automated transport has until recently been confined to the area of research, development and demonstration. However, two new PRT systems have been launched in Heathrow and Masdar, which can be added to the GRT system in operation at Rivium (Rotterdam) for many years.
