Cities' road safety efforts in the spotlight at Polis' side event at International Transport Forum

07 June 2018

On 23 May, more than 60 delegates of the International Transport Forum in Leipzig, Germany, discussed road safety priorities in cities and regions at a side event. Polis organised the event in cooperation with ETSC, iRAP, NACTO, New York City, the Open Transport Partnership and Volvo Group and contributed to increasing attention for the local level at this year's ITF summit. NYC presented their way towards "Vision Zero", for which it was presented the 2018 Transport Achievement Award the day after.

Polis' side event discussed innovative practice in road safety and how this can be deployed by local and regional authorities. The event made a clear point on the necessity to involve local governments to improve urban road safety and to bring sustainable transport objectives and the road safety community closer together.

New York City presented its path to Vision Zero and won the ITF's 2018 Transport Achievement Award the day after. Announcing the Award, ITF Secretary-General Young-Tae Kim said: “New York City has created an exemplary road safety programme that is a showcase for addressing urban road safety as a public health issue”.
