The role of civil society in the delivery of the goals set in the White Paper on Transport

The conference was organised by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) very timely at a point when the stakeholder consultation on the White Paper is ongoing.  The invited speakers from local authorities, universities, transport operators, consultancies and members of the EESC, as well as the EC, all shared the views that the civil society needs to be consulted more often on transport projects and initiatives. Civil society is not always easy to get involved and innovative methods to do that are necessary but practices show that when the citizens are consulted, public acceptance is higher. Examples of involvement of civil society in small-scale and large-scale projects alike, have shown that priorities or the working process usually change when the citizens’ opinion is taken into account.
