Rotterdam signs agreement with Gobike for new public bike sharing scheme
By the end of 2017 more than 450 electric bikes with tablet will be made available at 20 locations in the city. Rotterdam will offer free-floating bikes, meaning that users can pick up the bike at all storage locations and and won't need to go back to the starting point. This makes the bike very useful for short trips in the city from A to B.
The integrated tablet with navigation and electric power assisted bicycles are also highly suitable for long bike rides over the 600 kilometers of bike paths in Rotterdam.
"White bicycles Gobike should be a solid landmark in our streets" said Councillor Pex Langenberg. "This fits with an attractive modern city like Rotterdam and our ambition to become a city for cyclists. So it is easier to cross the city and bike offers a good alternative for short car rides. All these measures should provide healthier air in Rotterdam together"
Gobike will run a small scale pilot in 2016 with the bikes to test which locations are suitable. Bikers cycling community fietsfan010 will share their experiences with Gobike.
The number of available bicycles will progressively increase in 2017 to 450 electric bikes at 20 locations. Cycling is expected to grow in the three following years to 2,000 bikes at 150 locations.
