Polis attended first ITS meeting of UNECE

The event marked the launch of the UNECE strategy package on ITS that is expected to mark a milestone for future United Nations activities on ITS. The strategy package contains three different publications dealing with a general overview on ITS, a strategic note looking at the gaps and impediments to the use of ITS and the UNECE Road Map on ITS identifying 20 global actions to be performed by UNECE until 2020. The document can be downloaded by clicking here.

UNECE is working on ITS mainly in the area of international vehicle standardisation and has a number of ‘working parties’ dealing with this. The vehicle-centric approach of the UN was evident in many of the presentations given at the meeting. However, it became clear during the course of the event that the policy dimension had to be addressed. Without the buy-in of the public sector, deployment would remain fragmented. This is reflected in several actions of the UNECE Road Map on ITS including: action 1, reaching a common definition for ITS; action 4: facilitating interoperability and the ITS architecture; and, action 16: developing cost-benefit assessment methodologies.
