Brussels Region invests in metro workshops
The automation of the metro system in Brussels makes it necessary to renovate the current depot, and to build a second one. The region is currently investigating the best financing solutions for the investment of 85 million euros, including public private partnerships.
The region has opted for automation of metro line 1 and 5 to manage the growth of the number of passengers. More rolling stock will be put in place. The automated vehicles will also require different and more maintenance. The subterranean depot will be able to stall 30 trains of 94 m long.
Meanwhile, the implementation of the Brussels regional express railnetwork (mainly managed by the Belgian national railways) is further delayed. The initial deadline of a complete network by 2016 has been postponed to 2022.
