Dear members,

The Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP) Award is now open for your applications! This year’s theme is Shared mobility in sustainable urban mobility planning. Last year’s SUMP award focused on urban freight and was presented to Polis member Brussels Capital region. We encourage you to apply by 3 November 2017!

An important update about the EU clean air policy is the new 2017 EU Air Quality report. It was launched during last week’s European Week of Regions and Cities along with the launch of a new European Clean Air Forum (16 and 17 of November in Paris). More information is available in this newsletter.

Polis workshops and keynote at Autonomy’s Urban Mobility Summit in Paris

Today, Polis' Karen Vancluysen gives the keynote “The Role of Cities in MaaS: A Study” at Autonomy’s Urban Mobility Summit in Paris. In addition, Polis hosts the “Active Travel for Healthy Cities” workshop at the summit with Transport for London, Ile de France and Transport for Greater Manchester. This is followed by a joint-workshop with German Marshall Fund on “How private sector actors are able to introduce new technologies in cities: a European and American Perspective”.

Reading to present Polis MaaS paper at Intelligent Transport Conference

Polis member Reading Borough Council, namely Marian March, will present the network's views on Mobility as a Service (MaaS) at the Intelligent Transport Conference in London 31 October 2017 on behalf of Polis. Polis members benefit from a 20% discount on the registration fee. Ahead of the event, Polis Deputy Director Ivo Cré was interviewed by Intelligent Transport about smart cities and what it takes to become a reality.

Traffic management as a Service in Ghent – a cost-effective and versatile solution for small and medium-sized cities

Polis member, the city of Ghent, has secured European money to develop further its concept of Traffic Management as a Service (TMaaS). The concept is based on a fully digital and virtual platform that processes traffic data and provides real-time information to residents.

The Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP) Award recognises local authorities that have developed a Mobility Plan that satisfies the diverse transport needs of people and businesses, whilst improving quality of life. Each year, the award highlights a different aspect of mobility planning.

Successful Joint CoEXist / MAVEN / TransAID workshop on the implications of vehicle automation for city and regional authorities

On 10 October, Polis network hosted a joint workshop between the three CoEXist, MAVEN and TransAID European projects on the implications of vehicle automation on urban roads. The three H2020 projects consider the traffic management and infrastructure aspects of automated vehicles while CoEXist is also exploring the transport planning and policy dimensions.

Marrakech declaration: Road safety needs better data

The International Transport Forum's (ITF) permanent group on road safety, IRTAD, met in Marrakech, Marocco on 10-12 October, which adopted the “Marrakech Declaration”. Its message: Improving the quality of road safety data is essential to reducing the number of road deaths and injuries. Polis is cooperating with the ITF's "Safer City Streets" intiative on road safety data in cities.
