Portoferraio (IT)

Portoferraio is the administrative center of Elba, a small island of about 224 square kilometres situated in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, famous tourist destination, especially during the summer season, for the beauty of its landscapes and its beaches. Particularly evocative is the historical centre of the city, protected by the Medici Fortresses, built in 1548 by order of Cosimo I de 'Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. Another historical-cultural attraction of the old city is “Villa dei Mulini”, the official residence of Napoleon Bonaparte during his exile on Elba in 1814 and it’s now a national museum. Portoferraio is the main port of access to the island: during the summer season thousands of tourists arrive on the island to visit its enchanting places, so it’s essential to encourage the use of sustainable mobility, alternative to private cars, to preserve the natural environment and the well-being of residents and tourists.

Portoferraio is involved in EU projects: Civitas Destinations (locally known as "Elba Sharing") and CIEVP.
