European Mobility Week and Do the Right Mix: working together for cleaner air

08 October 2013

Thousands of activities have taken place across Europe as part of European Mobility Week 2013. DG Move's Sustainable Urban Mobility Campaign ("Do the right mix") played a large part in the week, with events to encourage citizens to think about how their transport choices affect air quality and how changing the way they travel could improve their health and well-being.

The European Mobility Week, which culminated in car-free days across the continent on Sunday 22 September, focused on raising awareness of how transport affects air quality.

The Sustainable Urban Mobility Campaign aims to promote the advantages of combining different modes of transport under the slogan ‘Do the Right Mix.’ The campaign runs in 31 countries, which includes six countries receiving targeted support: Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Romania, and the UK. Each of these target countries hosted activities during European Mobility Week:

In the UK, the ‘Supermodals’ photo competition was launched to show off people choosing sustainable travel options and encourage others to follow their example. In Athens, Greece a ‘Do the Right Mix’ video was shown on public transport and in metro stations, while in Italy the video was shown in selected railway stations across the country. Sofia, Bulgaria, ran a ‘20 City Points’ game where participants could discover new ways of getting around the city.

As part of the campaign, local communities were invited to submit their initiatives to the ‘Do the Right Mix’ website. Of these, eighteen winning entries were selected to receive funding from the EU. Many of these winning communities held events during European Mobility Week. In Norway, Oslo City Council teamed up with electric vehicle manufacturers to offer residents the chance to see and test electric vehicles. In Ireland, Kerry hosted a bicycle festival, promoting cycling as a sustainable and practical form of transport. While in South-West Finland a campaign took place to promote a broad array of climate-friendly alternatives to driving.

Although this year’s edition of EMW has now ended, the EU will continue its support to Do the Right Mix activities throughout the year in all 28 EU Member States, as well as Norway, Switzerland, and Lichtenstein. For more information on events taking place in your country, see
