Leuven (BE)

Leuven (BE)

The city of Leuven has about 100.000 inhabitants and hosts the oldest university of north-west Europe with more than 50.000 students. Leuven is located 20 km east of the Brussels and at 15 minutes by train from Brussels Airport. Hence, Leuven is a very dynamic city with a strong growth in both population as employement.

This results in a lot of traffic congestion while Leuven also sees a spectacular growth in public transport use (a five-fold increase of PT users in 20 years) and a high share in cycling (17-20% modal share).

The last decades saw a number of major city developments projects including the railwaystation, harbour area and innercity development projects. To cope with the urban developments there is a high sense of urgence to transform Leuven's transport system into a sustainable urban transport system. Leuven is currently rethinking the public transport system with a focus on a high level regional public transport network, which forms the basis for future urban developments in the whole region (RegioNet Leuven). Investments are also made into a high-end cycling network with cycle highways and local traffic circulation measures, bicycle parking facilities and bicycle parking control. Leuven is also active to improve parking management, traffic management and city logistics (currently preparing a business case on an urban distribution centre).

The city's ambitions regarding a sustainable urban transport system are framed within the LKN2030 (Leuven climate neutral 2030). In LKN 2030 more than 60 local partners cooperate withthe city including the biggest companies and the university, which all have a committment to LKN2030.

The city of Leuven is involved in the EU co-funded projects NISTO, Health4Growth, Revitalisering Oude Industriehavens, Pure Hubs and Functioneel Groen.
