Braila (RO)

Braila (RO)

Braila is an ancient city from eastern Romania, located on the left banks of the Danube (in Wallachia), 100 km from the Black Sea. Braila, with its 230 000 inhabitants, is an important commercial port. During the 19th century, the port became one of the three most important ports on the Danube in Wallachia. The city's greatest period of prosperity was at the end of the 19th century and in the early 20th century, when it was an important port for most of the merchandise coming in and going out of Romania. A major rehabilitation scheme, with the support of European funding, is now underway in the old centre (where there are many 19th century buildings) with the aim of transforming Braila into a tourist attraction in Eastern Wallachia.

With regards to transport, the city seeks to satisfy all citizens’ needs for transportation, offering new public transport facilities to Braila citizens, tourists and persons with reduced mobility at a lower fare. The city isworking to extend the current public network to the new commercial and residential areas. Braila's Sustainable Urban Transport Plan aims to reduce the negative impact of urban transport on the environment, by reducing car transport demand and encouraging walking and cycling.
