The Lille Metropolitan Urban Community (Lille Métropole Communauté Urbaine) is the body that brings together the commune of Lille and neighbouring districts that make up the Lille metropolitan area. The goal of the Urban Community is to build a better metropolitan area by synchronising the health system, transport system, environmental actions, etc.
Lille Métropole is responsible for the co-ordination of Transpole, the private sector company that operates a public transport network throughout the Métropole. The network comprises buses and coaches (8 cross-border lines reaching into Belgium including 193 biogas buses), trams (two lines) and a driverless metro system (two lines). The Lille Metro is a VAL system (véhicule automatique léger = light automated vehicle) that opened on May 16, 1983, becoming the first automatic metro network in the world.
Lille is involved in EU projects: BAPTS, BIOGASMAX.
