Emilia-Romagna (IT)

Emilia-Romagna is a region located in the northern part of Italy and has a population of 4 million inhabitants. At regional level, there is a very high level of car ownership, with some 600 cars per 1000 inhabitants, with impacts on traffic, environmental pollution and energy consumption.

In the Emilia-Romagna Region, road traffic is responsible: at regional level for 60% (and 70% in urban areas) of emissions of NOx and dust particles and for 27% of CO2 emissions; and in urban areas for more than 90% of emissions of CO and benzene and for almost 50% of PM10 emissions.

The Regional Public Transport Agency coordinates the performance of the regional programme for a common commitment to tackle the issues of sustainable development, energy efficiency and quality control systems. The actions being undertaken are: encouragement of the use of cleaner public transport and the use improvement of “alternative modes” (walking and cycling).

Emilia-Romagna is involved in EU project Sugar.
