Emmen (NL)

The municipality of Emmen is located in the north-eastern part of the Netherlands, in the Province of Drenthe. Emmen includes the city, thirteen smaller towns/villages and counts about 110,000 inhabitants and is one of the Netherland’s greenest regions. Emmen borders to Germany and is part of the Dryport region (strategically located between the western Netherlands and the Bremen – Hamburg conurbation. The region has a modern trimodal terminal with access by road, rail and inland waterways and is connected to the German system of freight traffic centres known as Güterverkehrszentern (GVZ). Emmen hosts the largest industrial cluster in the northern Netherlands.

The Municipality Council adopted an ambitious CO2-emission reduction target in 2012: to be completely CO2-emission free by 2050. Emmen signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking (FCH 2 JU). Alderman Bouke Arends was appointed as Rapporteur for the Committee of the Regions with respect to the European strategy on Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems, a milestone towards cooperative, connected and automated mobility, early 2017.

Emmen is much interested in the pillars Traffic Efficiency & Mobility and Social & Economic Challenges of Transport, more specifically in sub-topics such as: cleaner vehicles & alternative fuels (LNG/CNG/H2), Cooperative ITS, automated vehicles, multimodal transport, accessibility and (safety of) infrastructure. Emmen aims to offer an innovative environment for (cross border) piloting, operational testing and showcasing smart transport solutions. Furthermore, Emmen would welcome initiatives focusing on the missing links in the Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T).
